Live wild bird exports from West Africa: insights into recent trade from monitoring social media

Summary The expansion of wildlife trade on social media presents many challenges but also opportunities to gain insights into areas where there is little recent data. West Africa has historically been a major source wild birds in international 2007, the requirement for CITES (Convention International Trade Endangered Species Wild Fauna and Flora) Parties monitor host West-African species ended data regarding current trade. To address this gap, we surveyed trade-related posts created by known traders from 2016 2020 popular social-media platform identify composition, routes potential conservation biosecurity risks. We identified 427 featuring broad taxonomic diversity birds, including 83 26 avian families, nine CITES-listed species, four listed IUCN Threatened categories 19 associated with alien introductions linked bird Disease risks were identified, multiple housed together densely-stocked facilities recorded as posing disease risk. Using novel analyses post-engagement, observed facilitating connections users across globe. Trade-related engagement particularly came countries Middle East South Asia, notably India which strong domestic restrictions importation birds. Further research needed impact region, population status volume largely absent.
